As a former attorney, let me say with respect to Alexis’s post that there is a multiplicity of options available within the practice of law other than trial work, as well as a variety of lifestyles – they’re by no means all “hectic.” That doesn’t mean that practicing law is right for Alexis, but it does mean that the post may reflect a narrower view of the profession of a lawyer than actually exists. I’d strongly recommend Kimm Walton’s “America’s Greatest Places to Work with a Law Degree” for Alexis and anyone else with whom that post resonated. When I went from a firm to a solo practice, I vastly reduced (and could have eliminated, had I wanted to) my court appearances altogether. I did a lot of advising companies, drafting and reviewing contracts and other documents, etc.
